As we pulled out of our space at Buckinghorse Campground our neighbors across the way hailed us, we supposed to ask a question. Instead, they pointed out that we were dragging our little outdoor stepstool. This was the umpteenth time we had dragged our poor little stepstool. Bringing in the stool is on our little checklist, but we can’t seem to remember to go through the checklist. Ah, the vagaries of post youth travel.
When DR was 11 years old the movie, “Nikki, Wild Dog of the North” came out. It was about a French trapper and his dog Nikki trapping in the Northwest Territories. Or at least that is how DR remembers it. Ever since, the Northwest Territories have been on DR’s bucket list. Today we crossed that item off. That movie is also the source of a phrase that DR often uses, “ahhh, mon ami”, which translates to “ahh, my friend”.
Fort Liard was our target destination in the Northwest Territories. Round trip our NWT diversion added 218 miles and a day to our itenerary. The 109 mile drive up Highway 77 was a long and lonely ribbon of asphalt through forest. We did spot 2 black bears, 5 sandhill cranes, 2 bison, a marmot, a beaver and a momma black bear and three tiny cubs. Here are the ones we managed to get pictures of.
Aaaah, Mon Amis!!! You made it to the Northwest Territories . . . tres bon! Next step, the Yukon & the Yukon River! However, I will not acquiesce to the “Alaska Hwy” . . . to me, forever, the “:Alcan Hwy”.
