Coal River to Teslin, Yukon

Today was another six hour drive to get closer to Alaska. The critter count was pretty low. All we saw was a small herd of bison.

We did cross the Continental Divide. Unfortunately we also got a fair sized chip low in our windshield from an 18 wheeler passing the other way on a graveled stretch of asphalt and throwing up a rock. From our research, this is to be expected and windshield replacements come with the territory up this way. On the Dalton Highway up to the Arctic Circle, which is all gravel, we will probably fair even worse, but we knew this going in and are glad to pay the price.

Today, we entered the Yukon Territories. We stopped in Watson Lake for some grocery shopping, lunch and to upload some blog stuff. We had read about the Sign Forest where people from all over the world have mounted more than 88,000 signs since 1942. Here is Laura’s video clip as we drove around the forest.

  1. Just so you’ll know, about 20 miles south of Whitehorse, at the north end of Marsh Lake, you will encounter the headwaters of the Yukon River, which ultimately flows all the way across Alaska, & empties into the Bering Sea. North of Whitehorse 100 or so miles, you will encounter Lake Kluane . . . you might stop in here at Destruction Bay for a trout dinner, fresh from the lake (we remember it as being very good . . . I even liked it, & as you know, I hate fish). It looks like you’re having a great time . . . keep it up!!!
