Festival to Cantwell

We left the music festival and headed towards Denali National Park. When we arrived it was pretty busy and there were no campsites available in any of the campgrounds in the park. We opted to drive the allowed 15 miles into the park to check things out. There was quite a bit of traffic especially at a moose jam we encountered. The moose was well hidden and our position in the moose jam did not allow us to get any photos other than the moose jam itself. The road was asphalt and well maintained. In order to go beyond milepost 15 on the road you have to be in one of the parks busses at prices ranging from $33.50 to $222.25. We opted to postpone our Denali Park excursions for a while and headed South for Cantwell where we were able to reserve a space in a nice little campground with great cell service. We wound up staying there two nights and got some laundry, blog and other chores done. In the afternoon we drove around 30 miles down the Denali Highway (8). Laura, miss eagle eye, spotted a bull moose deep in the brush and we managed to get an acceptable photo as it moved through a small clearing in the heavy brush.

a bull moose, the only large animal we saw on the Denali Highway (8)

DR decided to give Laura a night off and out so we headed for a small cafe we had passed 13 miles North of our campground.

The little cafe where we were surprised with a gourmet meal

To our surprise we had a lovely gourmet dinner. DR had the halibut and Laura had halibut and chips.  So far we have been eating pretty healthy on the trip. We decided it was a golden opportunity to have a desert. Laura had apple pie al a mode and DR had his favorite oatmeal/white chocolate cookies and vanilla ice cream.

After two nights at the Cantwell Campground we plan on tackling the 135  mile long Denali Highway, 100 of which are dirt road. The first 30 miles were sure beautiful.
